How to use Arena Chat

Chatting in Arena

Chats are available in live Arenas and are located either on the right hand side of the experience (1) or below when the browser window is narrow or on mobile devices in portrait mode.


Messages in Chat

Sent messages appear in a variety of formats depending on who sent them:

  • Host messages (2)
  • Logged on user messages (3)
  • Anonymous user messages (4)

The send message field (5) is used to send new chat messages.

1. Sending Messages.

New messages may be sent by entering text in the send message field and clicking the send icon (1) or by pressing enter on non-mobile devices.  Chat messages are limited to 500 characters and may also include emoji from the emoji picker (2).


2. Commands to style text and tag users in Messages.

Chat message texts supports bolding and italicizing text, along with tagging users, and hyperlinks.


Tagging Users

Use the @ symbol followed by the user name to tag someone in a chat message:

The tagged user will appear as follows:


Bolding Text

Surrounding text with * will bold text (asterix):

The bolded text appears as follows:


Italicizing Text

Surrounding text with _ will italicize text (underline):

The italicized text will appear as follows:


Hyperlinking

When hyperlinks are added to the text of a chat message, they appear as follows:


3. Changing the Appearance of Chats.

The appearance of Chats can be customized between three color schemes and 9 font sizes.  To view the options, select the gear icon (1) at the top right of the chats and the appearance dialog will appear.  Three themes are available supporting different color and contrast themes and may be changed by clicking on a theme (2).  Font sizes may be changed by clicking on one of the size options (3).

To close the appearance dialog, click the gear icon.


4. Viewing the Chat Roster.

The number of users in chat appears at the top of the Chats.  Clicking users icon (1) will display the list of users in the Chats.  Click Chat (2) to return to the Chats.


Chat View

Chat View is an option available to Arena Hosts which maximizes the Chats for visibility along with muting the stream's audio.  This view can be useful for Arenas with highly active chatting users and helps focus on interacting with your users in chat.  This view is only available to Hosts.  


To maximize Chats, click Chat View (1) in the lower left.


To exit Chat View, click Stage Tools (1) in the lower left.
